Suffolk Overview - Positioned to the north-east of London, the rural county of Suffolk is part of the area of The UK known as East Anglia. The county has an area of 1,466 square miles plus a population of about 0.73 million. The county borders the counties of Essex, Norfolk and Cambridgeshire, Ipswich is the capital town, while additional vital towns include Lowestoft, Stowmarket, Newmarket, Felixstowe and Bury Saint Edmunds. The county is principally flat and low-lying, in the north of the county there are wetland areas that are within The Broads National Park. From 1889-1974 the county of Suffolk was divided into 2 administrative counties, West Suffolk and East Suffolk.
