Suffolk Overview - Based to the north-east of Greater london, the rural county of Suffolk is in the area of The United Kingdom known as East Anglia. The county of Suffolk has an area of 1,466 sq mls plus a population of around seven hundred and thirty thousand. The county of Suffolk is bounded by the counties of Norfolk, Cambridgeshire and Essex, Ipswich is the major town, while other important towns are Lowestoft, Felixstowe, Stowmarket, Newmarket and Bury St Edmunds. During the period 1889-1974 the county was split into two administrative counties, East Suffolk and West Suffolk.
