Suffolk Overview - Set to the north-east of London, the rural county of Suffolk is in the region of England generally known as East Anglia. Suffolk has a land area of 1,466 square miles plus a population of about seven hundred and thirty thousand. The county of Suffolk borders the neighbouring counties of Essex, Norfolk and Cambridgeshire, the major town is Ipswich, whilst additional major towns include Bury St Edmunds, Felixstowe, Stowmarket, Newmarket and Lowestoft. Suffolk is largely flat and low-lying, in the north of the county there are wetland areas that are within The Broads. During the period 1889-1974 the county was divided into two administrative counties, East Suffolk and West Suffolk.
